What is a VESA?
Ok, so what is a VESA plate?
VESA is an acronym for the Video Electronics Standards Association, a group of over 300 companies that came together to establish certain standards in the consumer electronics industry. One of these standards covers the aforementioned mounting hole patterns located on the back of your TV, which you may also see referred to as the Flat Display Mounting Interface (FDMI) or VESA Mounting Interface Standard (MIS) or just simply the VESA hole pattern.
Working out your VESA.
In most cases, you’ll be able to find your TV’s VESA size in the user manual or on the manufacturer’s website. If all else fails, you can easily measure it yourself by following these simple steps:
Measure the horizontal distance between the centres of the left and right holes. This will give you the first measurement.
Measure the vertical distance between the centres of the top and bottom holes. This will give you the second measurement.
VESA specifications are typically displayed in millimetres and are read in order of the horizontal measurement followed by the vertical measurement. For example, if the distance between your TV’s mounting holes measures 400mm across by 200mm high, your VESA size will be shown as 400×200.
For office monitors, we generally work with a 75 x 75mm VESA or 100 x 100 mm VESA. However, look out for larger curved monitors as these can have different configurations.
The last point to consider is the screw size to mount the VESA plate to your monitor. Firstly, we do not recommend using the screws that are on your monitor. These are often too short and generally used to hold a plastic cover. In most cases, you will use an M4 screw and often a monitor arm, such as the WorkTools solutions, will provide a range of sizes. Generally, the 12mm is commonly used.
